PS3: To Catch A Predator

It’s long been known that Federal agents have been cracking down on child pornographers, often un-encrypting data from seized hard drives in order to further incriminate the accused. However, it’s recently been revealed that law enforcement has switched from using a Tableau/Dell server combination, which runs about $1,100, to using a PS3 which generally speaking, has the same computing power at a quarter of that cost.
However, the interesting thing here is that while all consoles are capable of providing the power needed to decrypt the 282 trillion possibilities for a six-digit password, the PS3 was chosen because Linux can be installed on it. This means these agents are using the old PS3 “phat” version in order to accomplish their goals. A very interesting use of the console indeed.
