GameSpot Modern Warfare 2 Controversy

Modern Warfare 2 has been suspected by many to be the game of the year, with literally thousands of players lined up at retail locations to get their hands on the game within hours of the release. The game also launched on Steam earlier this week, instantly becoming a bestseller overnight. However, the launch has not been without controversy.
Those unfortunate enough to wait out the mad rush often turn to major gaming network reviews to determine if the game is actually worth getting. GameSpot is a huge network with millions of users, but its known to be a bit shady when it comes to their reviews, as evidenced by the Kayne & Lynch fiasco. Several users of the site are now claiming that GameSpot jacked up the score it gave the game from an 8.5 to a 9.0 due to a request by Activision. This is not the first time controversy has been started surrounding the game, and when the original author of the review was contacted, here’s what he had to say concerning the matter:
Watters said, “That rumor is patently false. I wrote the review, I produced the review, I set the review live, and at no point was the score changed. It was a 9.0 all the way. Somebody fabricated that tidbit and it is absolutely untrue.”
Given GameSpot’s history with promoting games and being an inherently commercial website, it wouldn’t be surprising if this were true, despite what the author says. Oh, and here’s the 8.5….
