Darkest Of Days Takes You To History’s Deadliest Battle Sites

darkest-of-days

Far too many first person shooting games are based on one time period.  In Darkest of Days they have changed this one dimensional approach by allowing you to play in various battle grounds and time periods in one game.  This is revolutionary in my book.  Would Call of Duty ever make one massive game of various time periods and scenes? Absolutely not, which is why there are so many sequels.  And might I add they have selected a collection of the deadliest battle sites in the history of war.

In Darkest of Days not only do you get to play in the various time periods, but you also have a unique gameplay theme, which is to save certain individuals who are important to the continuity of history.  I think this clearly separates it from so many other first person shooters that are all about the kill.  Another positive aspect of the game is the weaponry.  In all, there are 24 weapons that is a mixture of modern day and the original time period.  As you can imagine this allows you to significantly change the way fighting was done during General Custer’s days.

Like I mentioned above there are various time periods in the game which are considered some of the darkest of days of war.  Here the various time zones and descriptions:

  • Antietam during the American Civil War – This battle was the bloodiest single day of war in American history with over 23,000 deaths.  It was fought on September 17, 1862 in Sharpsburg, Maryland.
  • Battle of Little Big Horn – This war is also known as Custer’s last stand.  The battle was between the United States Army Forces and Native Americans.   It occurred on June 25 and June 26, 1876 and was fought in Montana, United States.
  • The Battle of Tannenberg -  This battle was in August, 1914 between the Russian Empire and the German Empire in WW I.  The battle resulted in almost complete destruction of the Russian Army.  The exact numbers were 92,000 Russian troops were captured, 78,000 were killed or wounded, and only 10,000 escaped.  While Germany saw fewer than 20,000 casualties.
  • Pompeii as Mt. Vesuvius is erupting – This is the time period I was most excited for and it didn’t disappoint.  You get called into action in Pompeii (southern part of Italy) as Mt. Vesuvius is erupting spanning two days in AD 79.
  • German WW II POW Camp - We’ve all played the various WW II games but rather than the standard format of rushing Normandy, Darkest of Days takes you to a German POW camp.  You can expect to see the brutalities of war in these camps.
  • The game is being released September 9th for the XBox 360 and PC.  You can check out the Darkest of Days trailer at our most recent Trailer Monday’s post.
